Mrs. Nash's Home-Style Round Steak

A friend's mother gave this recipe to me when we first got married-I've probably made it a hundred times since! It's so easy, incredibly delicious and round steak is still pretty inexpensive. I usually double this for my family of nine.

1 1/2 pounds beef round steak
2 tablespoons flour
2 tablespoons oil
1 teaspoon instant bouillon granules or
1 teaspoon Better Than Bouillon beef bouillon
1/2 cup hot water
1 cup shredded or chopped carrot
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme, crushed

2 tablespoons flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon Kitchen Bouquet, optional

Cut steak into individual pieces; coat with 2 tablespoons flour. Brown in hot oil; season with salt and pepper. Place in a large crockery cooker. Dissolve bouillon in hot water; combine with carrot, sugar and thyme. Pour over steak. Cover, cook on high for 4-6 hours. Remove meat to platter; keep warm. Measure liquid; add water to make 3/4 cup. Pour into a saucepan. Whisk 1/4 cup cold water into 2 tablespoons of flour. Stir into the liquid in the saucepan; add salt and Bouquet if using. Cook and stir until thickened. Serve over meat.
* I always add chunks of potatoes to the crock pot-you can double the bouillon if you do this.
