The Best Strawberry Shortcake

I have to say this is the only shortcake recipe I've ever tried-it's absolutely delicious and couldn't be easier to make! 

2 cups flour
1/4 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup butter
1 egg
2/3 cup milk

6 cups sliced strawberries
1/4 cup sugar (or to taste)

Stir berries with 1/4 cup sugar and set aside. In a medium bowl, stir the dry ingredients together.  Cut in butter; add egg and milk and stir until combined.  Place in an 8" round cake pan sprayed with cooking spray. Bake at 450 for 15 to 18 minutes. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pan and slice in half using a serrated knife. Serve with strawberries in between the two halves; top with dollops of whipped topping.
